Rod Nelson
Rod lives near Nailsworth in South Gloucestershire. He is a self-taught printmaker who takes inspiration from many different sources – from nature, from landscape, from other artists and printmakers and even from the art and craft of just making prints for their own sake.
The artist who has had the greatest influence on his work was the maverick Japanese woodblock artist, Shiko Munakata, whose work has a great sense of freedom, and respect for beauty and decoration. However, Rod has also drawn inspiration from many other artists working with woodcuts in both Europe and Japan, and is a founder member of the print-making co-operative Pine Feroda.
Rod’s work is regularly shown both nationally and internationally, from London to Shanghai and New York. He currently teaches woodcut at the renowned college of the arts and crafts at West Dean in Sussex, as well as at the RWA, and abroad. He is co-author (with Merlyn Chesterman RE) of the book ‘Making Woodblock Prints’, published by Crowood Press.
